Founded in 1919, the Daily News soon established itself as one of America’s most influential newspapers. The paper also expanded its presence in the digital media realm, launching the web site DailyNewsOnline.com in 1994 and the weekly insert BET Weekend for African American readers in 1996.
By the late 2000s, however, the newspaper had suffered its most dramatic decline in decades. As readership dwindled, the Daily News lost more than half of its advertising revenue, and in 2017, owner Mortimer Zuckerman sold the paper to Chicago-based Tronc for $1.
