The word entertainment has become so widespread that it can be used to describe almost anything, from an individual’s private selection of pre-recorded ‘entertainments’; to a banquet designed for two; to performances intended for thousands or even the global community. In addition to its broad meaning, entertainment can be highly personal and can also have a serious purpose – such as in the case of ceremonies or celebrations of religious festivals or of political satire for example.
