Entertainment is any activity that provides diversion or amusement, or gives pleasure and satisfaction. It can be a one-on-one experience, such as choosing a movie or game to enjoy with a friend, or it may involve a group of people sharing an activity, such as a party or a banquet. Entertainment can also be found in the form of a story, such as the tale of Scheherazade from the Persian professional storytelling tradition.
Bates and Ferri define entertainment as an activity that can be objectively understood, involves communication between text and audience, comes from outside the individual, offers pleasure, requires participation by the audience, and is passive in form.
