Founded in 1919, the Daily News considers itself “New York’s Hometown Newspaper,” informing everyday New Yorkers about their city and more. The paper was a pioneer of tabloid format, and reached its peak circulation in 1947 at nearly 2.4 million copies daily. In recent years the News has won a number of Pulitzer Prizes in public service journalism, including this year’s for an investigation into how authorities used an obscure law to force people from their homes. It has also been known for zesty headlines, intense city news coverage and star columnists such as Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill.
Today, the News covers a broad range of topics, from national and international politics to local crime and celebrity gossip, as well as sports (New York Yankees, Mets and Giants), arts and entertainment, and classified ads. It is also well known for its editorials and op-eds, with the New York Times frequently publishing articles written by the News’ editorial staff.

The Yale Daily News Historical Archive contains digitized versions of newspapers published by the Yale University Library since its founding in 1878. The collection spans more than 140 years of YDN reporting and is open to the world. This project was made possible through a major gift from a private foundation, which has facilitated the migration of the archive to a more user-friendly platform and expanded its scope to include the most recent issues. In addition to the digitized newspapers, the Yale Daily News Historical Archive contains supplemental materials such as a chronology and list of notable YDN editors.
