The Yale Daily News has been the primary source of news and debate at Yale for over 130 years. Founded on January 28, 1878, it is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and remains financially and editorially independent from the University. The News has a long history of covering breaking news events and exposing ethical wrongdoing. Many of its alumni have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public service, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Paul Steiger and Strobe Talbott.
The News is read around the world, and has been known for its aggressive investigative reporting and scathing editorials on campus and in the city of New York. It is also famous for its large and distinctive photographs, and for its intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, sports section, and opinion sections. It was the first newspaper to publish a tabloid format in the United States and is currently the eleventh-highest circulation daily newspaper in the country.
StudentNewsDaily is an online edition of the Yale Daily News that serves students across the nation. The site features articles accompanied by comprehension and critical thinking questions that are designed to engage readers and help them develop their understanding of important news stories. Each article also includes “Background” and “Resources” that provide additional information to help students understand the topic.
Unlike the slicker, larger national and international daily newspapers, weekly publications have a more personal touch. The people who read them live in the community and are invested in the local business climate. This means that when they respond to an ad, they are likely to keep coming back, and the return on investment for the advertiser is much higher than with a general national or local daily ad.
